What SaaS development really involves
Software-as-a-service isn’t a one-off project; it’s a business model. Your customers use the software in their browser, pay on a recurring basis and expect everything to work, all the time. That brings requirements a normal website never has: multi-tenancy, user management, payments, data protection, scalability and an architecture that can still be extended three years from now.
Plenty of SaaS ideas fail not because of the idea but because of the execution – too many features before the first customer, a foundation that buckles under load, or billing that needs manual fixing every month. Good SaaS development therefore combines product thinking with solid engineering. Every feature has to earn its place: more revenue, less effort or happier customers.
Colyer-Commerce runs its own SaaS product, Vericaro – a digital repair log for vehicles with two user groups, verified entries and QR-code verification. So we know the challenges of a SaaS business not just from client work, but from operating a product ourselves.
Our approach: from MVP to growing platform
It starts with a shared understanding: who are your customers, what problem do you solve and how will you make money? From there we define a tightly scoped minimum viable product (MVP) – the smallest version of your product that delivers real value and can win its first paying customers. A clickable prototype makes the concept tangible before any code is written.
Technically we rely on a proven, modern stack: Next.js and React for a fast interface, TypeScript for robust, maintainable code, PostgreSQL as a dependable data layer and Stripe for subscriptions and payments. Authentication, roles, tenant isolation and transactional email are part of the core architecture rather than afterthoughts. Development happens in short iterations – you follow progress in a staging environment and give feedback as we go.
Launch is where the real work begins: analysing user feedback, spotting bottlenecks and prioritising new features. If you wish, we stay on for the long run with hosting, monitoring and ongoing development, so the product keeps pace with your customers.
Working together: a direct line to your developer
At Colyer-Commerce you talk to the person who actually builds your product. There are no account managers in between and nothing gets lost in translation. Questions get answered quickly and decisions get made quickly – a real advantage in the early stages of a product.
We work from Switzerland with founders and companies across the DACH region, the UK and the rest of Europe. Collaboration runs over video calls, shared boards and short messages, in English or German. For us, Swiss quality means clear agreements, transparent communication and code that other developers can understand later on.
